In her dream, she and Suzanne were walking in the forest behind their little cabin. It was a beautiful sunny day. The day was warm. The surrounding forest was cool and inviting. Light trickled through the huge trees. They were laughing, hand in hand as they walked along. Some where far behind them, Jose had stopped to chase a rabbit. It was a well worn path that led to where a wood trough diverted water down to the cabin from the cascading stream. Every few days, they walked the path to clear debris from the mouth of the trough. In the winter, sometimes ice had to be busted away from it. Today though they didn’t expect to find much debris, it was just a relaxing time together.

Belle thought about how Suzanne seemed to radiate the sunshine they felt on their skin. She seemed to just glow with happiness. It was hard work to build the cabin, but they had done it! They built the barn for Ass, Pig and Suzanne’s horse, Sunny Boy. They even survived their first winter in the mountains! Life had settled into a routine of hard work and peace. They enjoyed working together and loved each other’s company. They talked about the plans they had for their little piece of paradise.

Belle could clearly hear Suzanne talking to her “Next year, we can expand the garden.” Suzanne was always excited about her garden! “We can put in more corn and I’d like to do a small field of oats!”

Belle laughed, “Where do you think you’re putting a field of oats!?”

“On the other side of the garden, of course!” Suzanne winked at Belle, “And I’m not putting it in, my sweet love is!”

Belle’s face lit up in mock surprise, “OH!!! Is that so?? And what makes you think she’ll do that for you!?”

Suzanne pouted her bottom lip out, “Because it would break my heart if she didn’t.”

“Well, we can’t have that, can we?” Belle smiled, knowing Suzanne could have anything she wanted of Belle.

The path came along side the busy stream as it fell and tumbled its way down the steep mountain. The stream widened into a small pool that was lined with rocks. They had been carefully placed by Belle to divert the water to the trough. The trough itself ran along the same path they had just walked. It was as direct a route as they could manage through the trees. It culminated in a huge, deep cistern to the south side of the cabin. The water overflowed from the cistern and cut its own path down to the barn. From there, it meandered on down the mountain. They quickly cleared the few sticks that had been carried into the little diversion pool.

Suzanne pulled her boots off and sat with her feet cooling in the cold water. “Joining me?”

“Shoot no! Too cold for my feet!” She looked down the path, looking for Jose. “Wonder if she caught that rabbit?”

Suzanne laughed, “If she did, she won’t be sharing with you!”

Belle knelt down beside Suzanne.
